Langzaam, heel langzaam druppelt er steeds meer informatie over Inception naar buiten. Het betreft de nieuwste film van regisseur Christopher Nolan, die we onder andere kennen van films als Memento, The Prestige en The Dark Knight. In eerste instantie was er praktisch niets bekend omtrent de film. Zelfs de cast zei niet echt te weten wat het plot van de film was. De synopsis is wel al een tijdje bekend: in de film maakt een wetenschapper (gespeeld door Leonardo DiCaprio) een onverwachte doorbraak, hij vindt een manier waarop mensen zich kunnen verplaatsen in de gedachten en dromen van andere mensen. Als het middel wordt ingezet om een misdaad op te lossen, beginnen de problemen en wordt de wetenschapper flink gedwarsboomd door een afperser.

Onlangs werd nog bevestigd dat de bovenstaande plotomschrijving klopt. Dat was eerst niet zeker, maar in Empire Magazine werd onder andere het volgende verteld door Chistopher Nolan. “Basically the film deals with levels of reality, and perceptions of reality which is something I’m very interested in. Its an action film set in a contemporary world, but with a slight science-fiction bent to it. Cobb [Leonardo DiCaprio's character], who is the center of things and expert in a particular technology that the film revolves around, has put this team around him [Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt]. It’s very much an ensemble film structured somewhat as a heist movie. It’s an action adventure that spans the globe.” Daarnaast vertelde hij dat de film ongeveer twee uur zou duren.

Qua structuur bleek tijdens een interview met hoofdrolspeler Leonardo DiCaprio dat de film overeen komt met Shutter Island, waar hij ook een rol in speelt. Die film werd door recensent Pim Wijers beoordeeld met 4,5 ster. The material and its complexity are what I’m attracted to…I’ve been lucky to work with people who want to tell stories that hit on different cylinders simultaneously. ‘Shutter Island’ is definitely that. ‘Inception’ is the same. It is Chris delving into dream psychoanalysis and, at the same time, making a high-octane, surreal film that came from his mind. He wrote the entire thing, and it all made sense to him. It didn’t make sense to many of us when we were doing it. We had to do a lot of detective work (laughing) to figure out what the movie was about.

Vandaag gaf Empire Online een video vrij van een interview met DiCaprio. Daarin vertelt hij nog meer over Inception. “It is complicated. It’s a complicated story-structure, but it’s sprung from the great filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s mind, and he’s been able to take highly complex jigsaw puzzles in a narrative and put them together like we’ve never seen.
This is a plot-structure that’s working on multiple layers simultaneously – and quite literally when I say simultaneously, I do mean multiple narratives simultaneously. So everyone’s going to be in for a treat when they see it, including me.”
